Report: Darren Sharper headed to PUP list

The not-so-minor knee surgery that Darren Sharper underwent early in the offseason turned out to be, well, not so minor.

The veteran safety for the New Orleans Saints will not be ready to go when the season kicks off Thursday, so the team is placing him on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, according to Brian Allee-Walsh of NewOrleans.com.

That means Sharper will be sidelined for the first six weeks of the season, at least, while second-year pro Malcom Jenkins has a shot at winning the job for good. That means Sharper will not be able to hunt Brett Favre’s surgically repaired ankle in the rematch of the NFC Championship Game. Maybe they can meet again.
