Report: Delhomme will visit Saints
The highest-paid backup quarterback in the league this coming season figures to be Jake Delhomme. That’s only if he doesn’t win a starting job in a place like Cleveland, where he has visited.
While the veteran could have a shot to win a starting job with the Browns, he would have to serve as a backup in New Orleans, where he is scheduled to visit on Friday and Saturday, according to Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network.
It would be an ideal fit for Delhomme, if he can’t land a starting job, because he began his career with the Saints. Backing up Drew Brees would be a nice gig as the Saints look to replace Mark Brunell. Whatever the case, he’ll be highly paid. As the National Football Post’s Andrew Brandt detailed here, Delhomme has an additional $12.675 million coming in guaranteed cash from his former employer, the Carolina Panthers. There was no offset in the deal, as Brandt notes, meaning that whatever Delhomme earns this season and in the future will be in addition to that large sum from the Panthers.
Getting paid by the Saints would allow Delhomme to get an up-close look at the Panthers twice per season, you know, to thank them for the parting gift.
