Report: Eagles fire defensive coordinator Sean McDermott
The Philadelphia Eagles gave every indication that Sean McDermott would return next season as the team’s defensive coordinator.
And today, McDermott was fired.
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen first reported the news. At a time when teams are moving quickly to fill openings, the Eagles will not need to find a new leader for their defense. McDermott was promoted into the role just before the start of the 2009 season following the death of Jim Johnson. It’s unusual for Andy Reid to fire an assistant coach.
The Eagles have granted defensive backs coach Dick Jauron permission to interview for the defensive coordinator position with the Cleveland Browns. Perhaps the Eagles will move to keep Jauron by offering him a promotion on staff.
