Report: Ex-RB coach sounds off on Portis
Clinton Portis is reuniting with his former coach Mike Shanahan in Washington, but unless he changes his work habits, he’s not going to be the same back Shanahan recalled says ex-Redskins running backs coach Stump Mitchell.
The Washington Post reached Mitchell, who has been hired as the coach at Southern University, and he said it’s up to owner Daniel Snyder to see to it that the running back turns his act around.
"He's got to do that, and Dan has to understand that that's what has to be done,” Mitchell told the Post. “In order for the Redskins to be successful, that's what Clinton has to do. He has to change the way he's done things in the past, in order for them to be successful as a team."
That is consistent with what the National Football Post reported last month when Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth was sent home from practice. There is a pattern of star treatment for players in Washington, and it undermines the coaching staff. Portis has been allowed to miss meetings to get massages, and he’s refused to practice at times, complaining that it’s too cold. Snyder has consistently backed Portis, sources said, and it created a problem coach Jim Zorn didn’t have a solution to at the time.
With Shanahan’s previous relationship with Portis, perhaps the Redskins can get more out of him in 2010.
