Report: Falcons hire Mike Nolan as defensive coordinator

The Atlanta Falcons are moving swiftly to reshape Mike Smith’s coaching staff.

Dirk Koetter was signed as the team’s offensive coordinator over the weekend and now a new defensive coordinator is in place as Mike Nolan has been hired to replace Brian VanGorder, who departed for Auburn. Fox’s Jay Glazer reported the news.

Nolan and Smith have a background together, working on the same staff in Baltimore previously. It’s a team that is ready to win, so that puts Nolan in a good position.

The work is not done yet. The team announced today that offensive line coach Paul Boudreau will not return. He had been with the organization since 2008. It’s not a real surprise. Offensive coordinators are often allowed to select their own line coach to ensure everything is working in concert.
