Report of Harbaugh interview surprise to agent

The New York Times reported that Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh will interview for the Notre Dame job this week, but that came as news to Harbaugh’s agent.

“I’m very surprised and a little taken aback by that report,’’ Jack Bechta said.

Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly announced via his Twitter account that he has informed his team he will meet with Fighting Irish officials and listen to what they have to say. He is the only coach to come forward and announce he will meet with Notre Dame about taking over the program.

“Not now or not in the future will I talk about any other jobs or opportunities,” Harbaugh told the Times. “I’m out recruiting right now.”

Harbaugh is on the road and is not in New York, according to Bechta, where the newspaper said interviews would take place. Harbaugh has quickly rebuilt the Stanford program. A message left with Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby has not been returned.

Reached by the Times, Bowlsby said he is “100 percent confident” that Harbaugh is not a candidate for the job and said there was “absolutely no chance” of Harbaugh being the next coach at Notre Dame.

In full disclosure, Bechta is a principal founder of the National Football Post.
