Report: O.J. Atogwe to visit Seahawks next week
More than two weeks after he became an unrestricted free agent, some interest could be forming in veteran safety O.J. Atogwe.
The ex-St. Louis Ram is planning to visit the NFC West rival Seattle Seahawks next week, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Atogwe became a free agent after the Rams failed to tender him at nearly $7 million for this season at midnight on June 1. The Rams also failed in a bid to sign the turnover-producing machine to a longterm extension, ultimately what he has been seeking.
Detroit and Miami have been rumored as potential landing spots for Atogwe, but the fact of the matter is he hit the open market at the worst possible time – months after teams had committed their bankroll in a season in which most clubs are tightening the belt with the labor cloud hanging over the game. Talk about an added dose of bad timing for the restricted free agent.
The Rams, who aren’t in a position to lose any talented players, remain in play for Atogwe. But if coach Steve Spagnuolo has been on his knees for a week now hoping this thing gets done, well, those knees ought to be mighty sore by now.
“I am very, very hopeful,” Spagnuolo said more than a week ago. "I am doing this (crossing his fingers) and I'm on my knees all the time hoping that this thing works out.
If Atogwe doesn’t head to Seattle for a week, the waiting game will continue for Spagnuolo.
