Report: Packers were investigated for bounties in 2007

The New Orleans Saints aren’t the only team that has been scrutinized for a bounty program.

The Green Bay Packers came under the microscope back in 2007, according to Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

The NFL investigated the Packers but did not hand out any punishments after the team agreed to discontinue te practices. According to the report, Packers players would pay defensive linemen for top performances. For instance, linemen would receive $500 each if they held Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson under 100 rushing yards. There was another incentive to hold the Carolina Panthers under 60 yards rushing as a team.

The Saints are in a different category because of what former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was doing, offering pay for injuring opponents and knocking players out of games. Really, the kind of program the Packers had in place, per this report, is something that is common. A lot of NFL locker rooms have had similar reward systems. In some instances, special teams players, guys typically near the bottom of the wage scale, have been rewarded for big plays. These bounty programs will likely be a thing of the past now.
