Report: Patriots signing Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow is signing with the New England Patriots, according to ESPN's Ed Werder.

Tebow, who was released by the New York Jets in April, is expected to be at the Patriots mini-camp on Tuesday.

Tebow, a first-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2010, will be reunited with Josh McDaniels, who was his head coach when he first came into the league. McDaniels is now with Patriots offensive coordinator.

The Patriots earlier in the day announced the release of quarterback Mike Kafka, which presumably creates the opening for Tebow to come in and be the team's third quarterback behind Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett. Patriots coach Bill Belichick is also a close friend of Urban Meyer, who was Tebow's coach at the University of Florida, where he became a folk hero and Heisman Trophy winner.

Tebow was used sparingly by the New York Jets, who traded for him last year after the Broncos signed Peyton Manning last off-season.
