Report: Pro Bowl could be suspended starting this year

An all-star game that has turned into a sideshow in the last several years might be done. For the time being, anyway.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported this morning on “Mike and Mike in the Morning” that the NFL is moving toward suspending the Pro Bowl this year. He said the all-star game is on “life support at best.”

The NFL’s deal with Honolulu has expired so they don’t have an agreement to go back there for the game in 2013. The NFL has been paid to play the game there in the past. The league has tried to increase interest in the game by moving it from the week after the Super Bowl to the week before the Super Bowl. It’s also been played at the same site as the Super Bowl.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said there have been discussions on the issue.

"We have been in discussions with the NFLPA about (the) Pro Bowl's future," Aiello wrote on his Twitter account. "No decision has been made on this season's game."

But when football isn’t football, it’s difficult to sell interest in the game. Without pass rushing, without blocking and with timid tackling, it’s really not football.

Stay tuned. It will be interesting to see what kind of player reaction there would be to this potential move.
