Report: Ron Rivera going to check out Cam Newton
Ron Rivera will have the chance to kill two birds with one round-trip, or something like that.
The first-year Carolina Panthers coach will attend the Auburn pro day on Tuesday, according to Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer. That is where he will be able to watch two candidates for the No. 1 pick in the draft: Heisman winning quarterback Cam Newton and defensive tackle Nick Fairley. Rivera said at the scouting combine that the team plans to bring Newton in for a private visit, but draft prospects are not permitted to work out for teams in those visits.
Newton needs to perform better in his passing drills than he did at the combine when he was erratic throwing to receivers he was not used to working with. The Panthers’ No. 1 need is finding a quarterback and it’s doubtful they view Jimmy Clausen as a real candidate to be that player. The second-round draft pick from last year will be in the mix, but Carolina is expected to draft a quarterback high or make acquire a veteran some way, somehow.
