Report: Saints trying to create more salary-cap room

In order to address the deep list of free agents, the New Orleans Saints need to create some more cap space.

The team is working on that mission, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, and might be able to get a new deal done with defensive end Will Smith.

A new contract wouldn’t give Smith additional money, but it might guarantee him more money and allow the Saints to move some money around, creating as much as $5 million to $6 million in additional cap room. With Drew Brees, Carl Nicks, Marques Colston and Tracy Porter to re-sign, the Saints will never every available cap dollar to get business done.

Even if New Orleans can’t bring all of the players back – and that seems virtually impossible – it needs cap room to look for replacements.
