Report: Saints will not play tag with Sharper
In the world of will the New Orleans Saints play tag with Darren Sharper or not, the latest report comes from Len Pasquarelli that the organization will not put the collar on the veteran safety.
The deadline for teams to apply the franchise and transition tags on players is Thursday. There has been considerable speculation by multiple media outlets that the Saints will tag Sharper, who will turn 35 during the middle of next season.
That was going to be an expensive proposition for New Orleans at a cost of $6.455 million for this season. The Saints signed Sharper as a free agent last March for $1.7 million. Provided the Saints don’t tag him, he will become a free agent on March 5. Surely, he would like to return to the Super Bowl champions to play in Gregg Williams’ defense, which enabled him to be more of a playmaker. But at what cost? The Saints need to make a determination how many seasons they believe Sharper has left and then try to strike a deal with him.
