Report: Samuels will retire this week

The expected retirement of Washington Redskins left tackle Chris Samuel will become a reality this week, according to Jason Reid of the Washington Post.

Samuels suffered a neck injury in an October loss at Carolina and the speculation since is that he will call it a career. The decision – Reid reports there will be a press conference this week – comes at the right time with free agency set to open on Friday.

Samuels consulted with a team of doctors following his injury and they came to the same conclusion, that he risked paralysis if he returned to the game.

The Redskins and first-year general manager Bruce Allen and first-year coach Mike Shanahan have some heavy lifting to do on the offensive line.
