Report: Singletary cans Jimmy Raye

We just finished a post questioning the leadership of San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary when news broke that he’s made a move.

According to Jason La Canfora of, Singletary has fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, a day after saying in Kansas City that he would remain in his role. Per the report, quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson will take over the coordinator duties becoming the third under Singletary. Remember, it was Singletary who determined he could not work with Mike Martz at the end of the 2008 season.

It’s an interesting move but one that doesn’t fix the problems the 49ers have right now in the midst of an 0-3 start. It wasn’t Raye’s team that failed to show up in Seattle for the opener or in Kansas City on Sunday. Singletary’s message hasn’t worked in the locker room.

Will removing Raye help? Sure. The offense has been a disaster and Raye has been criticized from Day 1, especially in light of the terrible communication issues in the loss against the Seahawks, issues that Singletary tried to defend.

This story will surely develop throughout the day. Singletary is making the right move here, but he’s still sitting on the hot seat. This move only validates that idea.
