Rex claims Jets 'better' of New York teams
Rex Ryan has fired the first shot in the Battle of New York between the Jets and Giants.
“I recognize that they’re an excellent football team, but I think we’re better,” Ryan told the New York Post via conference call.
"Better" might be a relative term since the Jets are coming off a 45-19 waxing by the Eagles, and the Giants laid an egg at home against the Redskins on Sunday, 23-10.
The Jets are 8-6, and holding the final AFC wild-card spot, while the Giants are 7-7, a game behind Dallas in NFC East. However, both teams should still get to the playoffs if they win their final two games. That's why Saturday's game is so crucial for both teams, as a loss for either would be staggering to their playoff hopes.
The playoff picture is only part of the lure of Saturday's game, as Ryan has often bragged that the Jets are the better team and won't take a back seat to the older, more established Giants, who are one of the NFL's longest-standing franchises. Now he gets the chance to show it.
“Certainly, we were the better team the first two years,” Ryan said. “We made the playoffs and went to the (AFC) championship game. To say a team’s better than you that never made the playoffs is ridiculous. Clearly, we were the better team my first two years. We get to prove it Saturday who the best team is this year.”
