The debacle regarding Santonio Holmes' benching at the end of Sunday's loss to the Miami Dolphins has apparently prompted New York Jets coach Rex Ryan to abandon the team captains for next season and beyond.

"This is something that I think I made a huge mistake in," Ryan said via NFL.com. "We're not going to have those anymore. We built a team, and I think that pulls away from the team a little bit."

Holmes was ripped by teammates after the game, including one who said he "quit" on the team.
