Rex Ryan doesn't want to drag out Jets' quarterback competition

Rex Ryan isn't in a rush, but he doesn't want to drag out the New York Jets' quarterback competition.

As veteran Mark Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith duke it out for the job with Sanchez the frontrunner to reain his status as the guy, Ryan is hoping it's a clear-cut call. Preferably earlier in the preseason.

“That’s something you want to do sooner rather than later, but I think the big thing is to make sure that there’s fair competition and you feel good about the decision," Ryan told reporters. "When I make that decision, clearly I’ll feel great about it. And not just me, but I’ll lean on several other people. But, it has to be the right decision.”

The preseason games will be given the most weight.

“I think you’ve got to get them in live situations to really feel good about it and certainly we’ll do that,” Ryan said.
