Rex says Schottenheimer not on hot seat
Rex Ryan came to the defense of embattled offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who has come under fire in part because of a stagnant New York Jets offense and the play of quarterback Mark Sanchez.
Ryan told the Newark Star-Ledger that if anyone is to blame for the Jets' problems, it should be him, not Schottenheimer and not Sanchez.
“I don’t think you blame things on one guy,” Ryan said. “If you are going to blame it on one guy, it should be the head coach, and that’s what you get paid to do.I’m not ducking my responsibility. That was my responsibility to win that game, that didn’t get done, and so the criticism should be placed on me. ... And you know what, I’ve got broad enough shoulders, I can take it.”
Sanchez said he believes he has the support of his teammates and that he has improved in his third season, despite his inconsistency.
“I’m not out to prove anything like that to people,” Sanchez said. “I just want to work hard for these guys on the team. And these guys know I am leading by example, being vocal if I need to.”
