Richard Marshall skipping minicamp in Carolina
Deuce Lutui isn’t the only restricted free agent missing out on the action this weekend.
Carolina Panthers cornerback Richard Marshall’s whereabouts are also unknown with the team holding minicamp this weekend. Like Lutui, Marshall was tendered at the second-round level meaning he stands to earn $1.759 million this season, you know, after he puts his name on the contract.
Unfortunately, the RFAs are out of any real leverage. The only thing they have left to do is withhold their services, and Marshall and Lutui are getting a weekend off from work by not signing and showing.
Marshall, of course, likely would have cashed in with a lucrative longterm extension had it not been for the current labor situation. So, he’s got good reason to be upset. But it’s not a situation that was created by the Panthers.
"Well, I'd rather he be here, that's why we like to practice," Panthers coach John Fox told reporters. "But I understand it. I know Richard's working hard. He's talked to a lot of his teammates, so we'll see him when he gets there.
“There are two sides of the NFL, the football and the business. I understand them both pretty well."
