Roger Goodell on Michael Sam: 'Good for him'

Days after Missouri defensive end and NFL draft prospect Michael Sam's ground-breaking announcement that he's gay, NFL commissioener Roger Goodell expressed support for him.

Goodell, who has a gay brother, commented on Sam at Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition “Wall Street Project” in New York City. The Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year is projected as a third-round to fifth-round draft target and is set to become the first openly gay player in the NFL.

“Good for him,” Goodell said. “He’s proud of who he is and had the courage to say it. Now he wants to play football. We have a policy prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. We will have further training and make sure that everyone understands our commitment. We truly believe in diversity and this is an opportunity to demonstrate it.”
