Ron Rivera makes key hires for Panthers staff

Ron Rivera got the bulk of the work done that was needed to complete his coaching staff in Carolina today.

The Panthers will hire Rob Chudzinski as their offensive coordinator when a contract is ironed out, according to the Charlotte Observer, and Sean McDermott has been hired as the defensive coordinator, news first reported by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

Chudzinski, who coached tight ends in San Diego on the same staff as Rivera, was the top choice of the new head coach. Rivera and McDermott are familiar with one another also, having worked together under Andy Reid in Philadelphia. McDermott was fired by the Eagles last week.

The Panthers are also expected to hire Brian Murphy as their special teams coach.
