Ryan Longwell comes up short in U.S. Open qualifier

Proving his no slouch on the course, Minnesota Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell took a shot at qualifying for the U.S. Open.

He didn’t come close to making the cut when he played Monday at MetroWest Golf Club near his home in Orlando, Fla., but it was a good first experience for him. Longwell fired an 83 and had only one birdie in his round, according to Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The top five players from the course advanced to a 36-hole sectional qualifier and Longwell’s scored was 18 strokes behind the leader.

“It was a blast and a great experience,” Longwell said. “I'll be much better next time just having gone through it.”
