Ryan Mathews' goal is to be in camp on time
Add Ryan Mathews, the rookie running back for the San Diego Chargers, to the growing list of draft picks pledging to take care of their business in time to be on the field at the start of training camp.
Like Ndamukong Suh, the second overall pick by the Detroit Lions, Mathews has pledged to be in camp when San Diego’s rookie class is due to report July 25. Now, keep in mind that veterans for the Chargers are not due until July 30, so there is some wiggle room in there for Mathews.
But none the less, he told Nick Canepa of the San Diego Union-Tribune that he plans to sign on the dotted line in time.
“My main thing is to get into camp as soon as possible,” Mathews said. “I’ve talked to my agent; I need to be there. Too many guys hold out for all the wrong reasons and I’m not going to be one of them.”
It’s like he took a page out of the book of Suh, who announced, “Like I’ve always said, I hope and plan to be in training camp (on time).”
And as we said then, it will really be news when a fresh draft pick full of confidence and a worldly education announces at the age of 22 that he is planning a holdout.
