Saints bag another ex-Bear
Surely the New Orleans Saints are not looking at the Chicago Bears the same way they did when the teams met in the NFC Championship Game following the 2006 season.
Something is going on though as the Saints signed their third ex-Bear in a little more than a month, announcing this afternoon that veteran guard Terrence Metcalf has signed a one-year contract. Metcalf has been mostly out of the NFL since the Bears released him a year ago. He had a short stay with the Detroit Lions.
He joins a team that has already picked up Alex Brown, expected to be the starting left defensive end, and fullback Jason McKie, who will compete for a backup job on the roster. The Saints have a wealth of depth at offensive tackle but look to Metcalf for some help inside.
A third-round draft pick from Ole Miss in 2002, Metcalf made 25 starts for the Bears and appeared in 84 games. He occasionally worked as a backup center.
The Saints also announced that guard Joe Tonga has been waived.
