Saints begin working their way under salary cap
The New Orleans Saints have started to address salary-cap issues that could make it difficult for them to navigate this offseason.
The team restructured the contract of linebacker Curtis Lofton, a move that will free up some $4 million in cap room, according to Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com.
The Saints projected to be roughly $20 million over the $121 million camp and this gets them started. Per the report, Lofton was going to have a cap number of $7.1 million but a $5 million roster bonus was converted to a signing bonus, meaning that money will now be pro-rated over the remaining life of the contract.
This is the easy part for general manager Mickey Loomis, who could approach players about reductions in pay and ultimately wind up cutting a few players.
