Saints kicking the tires on Mark Ingram

The New Orleans Saints got so far through their depth chart at running back last season they had to construct a new one.

And that, as much as anything, is one of the reasons the offense of the defending Super Bowl champions wasn’t as high-powered. Injuries ravaged the position and the Saints were pulling players off the street.

The club has reached a long-term contract with Pierre Thomas, who missed roughly half the season with an ankle injury, and undrafted Chris Ivory looks to have a bright future after leading the team in rushing. The Saints realize they can’t get shorthanded at the position next season and perhaps that is one of the reasons they’re kicking the tires on Mark Ingram today.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Ingram will visit the Saints today. The former Heisman Trophy winner at Alabama, who some believe will be the first back to come off the board, has been working out in the New Orleans area as he prepares for the draft.

The Saints would seem to have greater needs, but if Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis view Ingram to be a can’t-miss prospect who could anchor the running game for seasons to come, he would make plenty of sense.
