Saints sign Carney, will roll with two kickers
The New Orleans Saints have found a mentor, spiritual guru, fallback plan, babysitter or all of the above for kicker Garrett Hartley.
The Saints have signed 46-year-old John Carney to a one-year contract, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, and Hartley shanked a 29-yard field goal that would have lifted his team to victory over the Atlanta Falcons in overtime on Sunday.
Hartley also had two misses in the season-opening victory over the Minnesota Vikings, and now it appears the Saints are set up to carry two kickers as they did for parts of last season.
Carney made 13 of 17 field goals for the Saints last season and when Hartley took over with five games remaining in the regular season, Carney was retained as a kicking coach of sorts.
Now, he’s back to presumably do some of the kicking himself. He is third in NFL history with 2,044 points and has played for seven different franchises.
