Saints trolling for a veteran running back
The New Orleans Saints are going to consider free-agent possibilities as they deal with the loss of running back Lynell Hamilton for the season. He went down Wednesday with a torn ACL.
Hamilton was in line to replace the departed Mike Bell as the club’s short-yardage back. He had one start last season and was quickly growing into the role. The Saints don’t have any experience behind him in P.J. Hill and Chris Ivory. The duo combined for 15 rushes Thursday night in the preseason opener at New England. Neither really stood out.
“We're looking,” Saints general manager Mickey Loomis told Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “It's discouraging, because Lynell is a good player and had worked hard for this opportunity. We'll consider all of our options.”
There isn’t a lot out there right now. Former Chicago Bears running back Adrian Peterson has had tryouts in a few spots. It might be a stretch to call him a good short yardage back, but he blocks well in pass protection and is a solid special teams players. UPDATED: And Peterson isn't available any more because the Seattle Seahawks signed him on Thursday. Thanks to those who pointed that out. Missed it during travel to San Diego. So cross him off the list for the Saints or anyone else for the time being.
