Saints will not rule out possibly bringing Shockey back

Don’t rule out a potential return to the New Orleans Saints for Jeremy Shockey.

But understand if the veteran does suit up for the Saints in 2011, he’ll be in a reserve role.

Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune says not to cross off the possibility that Shockey comes back. But he wasn’t going to collect a base salary of $4.2 million and a $500,000 roster bonus this season.

Jimmy Graham has quickly emerged as the tight end of the future. The Saints are looking to clear money and Shockey is just the first to fall. Expect running back Reggie Bush, scheduled to make $11 million, to take a huge pay cut or get cut.

Injuries affected Shockey over the last few seasons, especially late in the season. But that doesn’t mean he couldn’t return. “The Saints still believe Shockey can play a role for them and have not closed the door on a possible return should he fail to land a job elsewhere,” Duncan writes.

So, stay tuned.
