San Diego's Travis Johnson fined for hit vs. Bears

The preseason opener was a costly adventure for San Diego Chargers defensive lineman Travis Johnson.

That is because he came away with a $5,000 fine from the NFL. Johnson was called for a late hit on Chicago Bears running back Chester Taylor when he jumped on Taylor’s back at the end of a seven-yard run in the second quarter.

A 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty was called on the play and the league deemed that the hit was indeed uncalled for, levying the fine against him. Taylor had already been tackled by Chargers linebacker Darry Beckwith and strong safety Steve Gregory.

Johnson has the right to appeal the fine. Players only receive stipends in training camp and preseason, small payments that will not match the fine.
