Schwartz does his best to say nothing about Stafford

Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz reiterated on Wednesday what he said on Monday, that he isn’t going to share any news when it comes to often-injured quarterback Matthew Stafford, who will not play on Sunday at Buffalo as he recovers from a right shoulder injury.

Tom “Killer” Kowalski of reported Tuesday that Stafford is dealing with a Grade 3 separation – worse than the Grade 2 separation he had earlier this season that knocked him out of five games – and the fear is he will be lost for the remainder of the season.

Schwartz didn’t necessarily refute that information, and he didn’t rule out the possibility that Stafford will require surgery, which most certainly would put him on the shelf for the rest of 2010.

“I addressed all of this on Monday and nothing has changed since Monday," Schwartz said. "I said we'll get him back as soon as we can. And any other speculation, any other rumor or anything else to do with Matt is irresponsible. Nothing's changed since Monday, and I'm going to leave it right there.

"Here's the deal. I'm not going to comment on. I'm not going to play Marco Polo on commenting and responding to every rumor or every other thing. We keep our evaluations and our things like that in-house and we don't announce those kind of things. I think it's irresponsible to say that he's considered for injured reserve, that he's going to have surgery, that his season's over.

"There was no basis for that, and anything I said in the press conference on Monday, nothing's changed from that standpoint."

As Kowalski notes, Schwartz said on Monday that the team wasn’t talking about surgery and on Wednesday he left the door wide open for that scenario. The Lions also claimed Zac Robinson off waivers earlier this week giving them another quarterback. Shaun Hill will start against the Bills. Let’s just operate under the assumption the Lions are without Stafford until further notice.
