Scott Wells could be headed out of Green Bay

Scott Wells could be headed out of Green Bay in a matter of a few weeks.

Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the veteran center is a long ways from a contract extension coming off his first Pro Bowl season and Wells is likely to exit via free agency at this point.

Per the report, Wells is seeking a contract commensurate with the top five centers in the league and the Packers are far from that position right now. Could things change? Sure. But per McGinn it is unlikely Wells agrees to a hometown discount after being replaced by Jason Spitz in 2009 and cut at the end of his rookie training camp.

The knock against Wells is that he is undersized at 6-2, 300 pounds, but he’s been the club’s best lineman for a couple seasons now and there is not a clear replacement for him on the roster. Still, there are plenty of free-agent options available and one AFC personnel man McGinn contacted ranked Wells third in the bunch.

Free agency begins in three weeks. Stay tuned.
