Shanahan considers benching Robert Griffin III

Given that his days in Washington could be numbered, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan contemplating benching quarterback Robert Griffin III for the rest of the season to protect him from injury could spell the end for him.

He's still contemplating sitting Griffin, though.

Griffin, who tore up his knee during the playoffs last season against the Seattle Seahawks, has struggled this season following offseason surgery with 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions for the last-place Redskins.

Griffin was removed from the Redskins' 45-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and replaced by backup Kirk Cousins.

“The reason why I left it up in their air, talking about that after the game, any time you have 24 sacks in the last five games and you go against a team that’s had two sacks in five games and you give up six, you’re always taking a look at what’s in the best interest of your organization,” Shanahan said. “The reason why I was hesitant, you always take a look at your franchise quarterback, and you want to make sure that going into the offseason, he’s healthy enough so he has a full offseason program. And that’s why I didn’t say he was the starter. That’s just something I’m saying in the back of my mind right now, thinking about it right now. I’ll let you know in the next couple days what I think.”

Shanahan was noncommittal on whether he'll make the change.

"I want to make sure he’s healthy," Shanahan said. "I think that’s the most important thing going into the offseason that he has his first full offseason of being healthy, and if something did happen to him, I think it would set our franchise back. That doesn’t say I’m going that way. I’ll think about it here over the next 48 hours and make a decision on Wednesday.”

Shanahan said he had consulted with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder about the decision.
