Shanahan making guarantees for Portis
Clinton Portis has a new spokesman.
Move over Southeast Jerome. Take a back seat Coach Janky Spanky. Beat it Dollar Bill. See ya later Sheriff Gonna Getcha.
Those were some of the aliases Portis used in recent seasons with the Redskins when he addressed the media in some wild outfits. Now speaking for Portis is hew old coach, who is also his new coach – Mike Shanahan. And Coach Mike is guaranteeing Portis will be on hand when the Redskins kick off their voluntary offseason workout program on Monday at Redskins Park. How about that?
"Oh, I guarantee you Clinton will be there," Shanahan said Thursday night according to Jason Reid of the Washington Post. "I know Clinton too well. He'll be there and kick-off the offseason on the right note. I want my leaders to be there, and hopefully we'll have 100 percent participation. If not, I'll be disappointed."
A new coach (and a new general manager) tends to raise the participation rate in offseason programs. Portis ought to be motivated by the fact that the Redskins are kicking the tires on some similarly used models like Larry Johnson. After never meshing with former coach Jim Zorn and feuding with many, Portis needs to take advantage of this opportunity to re-start his career in Washington. Otherwise, it could end quickly.
From the sounds of things, Shanahan believes that Portis is on board. That is a good start. Now, will he practice when it turns cold in November and December?
