Shawne Merriman denies Web report he had steroids

Shawne Merriman denies a report on that he was in possession of steroids at the U.S./Canada border just before training camp opened.

Merriman, who had two sacks and forced a third in nine snaps of action last Saturday in the preseason opener for the Buffalo Bills at Soldier Field, has been suspended previously by the NFL for performance-enhancing drugs. But he says there is absolutely no truth to the report.

Per the Web site, Merriman was stopped at the border at 2 a.m. on July 28. He was detained and “steroids were found in his possession.” However, Merriman was not arrested or charged with any crime and there’s yet to be evidence of such a discovery.

“To answer your question guys I’m disappointed by a story that was written by a Buffalo writer regarding a routine stop at the Canadian border a few weeks ago,” Merriman wrote on his Twitter account. “Absolutely NO steroids found in my vehicle & there were NO charges against me.”

Injuries have derailed Merriman’s career for the past three seasons. He looked to be his old self in his preseason debut with the Bills. We’ll see if anything else comes of this story.
