Shiancoe angling for new deal, but will likely need to wait

Visanthe Shiancoe is angling for a contract extension from the Minnesota Vikings, according to Pro Football Weekly, but with two years remaining on his current pact it will be interesting to see if he makes any progress.

Per the report, “his camp and the Vikings have been talking” but that doesn’t necessarily mean a deal will be in the works soon. In fact, given the state of the CBA and the way contract extensions have been handed out leaguewide in the last year or so, we would be rather surprised if Shiancoe got anything done before the 2010 season is completed – or more likely until a new CBA is hammered out.

Shiancoe reportedly would like to be paid with the top tight ends in the league. He signed a five-year deal in 2007 and has since switched to agent Drew Rosenhaus.

The Vikings have far more pressing contractual issues with running back Adrian Peterson. They need to sort out their future with him first before considering anything with Shiancoe, who has only three-fifths of the way through his last contract. Stay tuned.
