Sign of desperate times? 49ers turn to QB Troy Smith

The San Francisco 49ers have traveled overseas and it’s there that coach Mike Singletary has announced a change in quarterbacks.

Troy Smith will be the starter Sunday against the Denver Broncos, the coach announced this morning. With starter Alex Smith sidelined with a separated left shoulder suffered last Sunday in a loss at Carolina, Singletary has bypassed backup David Carr and turned to Smith in a desperate move to jump-start his team.

"The bottom line is I think for where we are, Troy Smith gives us a good opportunity to win the game," Singletary said this morning. “Probably the No. 1 thing I like about him is leadership. The ability to get everybody on the same page.”

We’ll see how Smith can get everyone on the same page when he hasn’t been around very long. The Niners picked him up just before the start of the season after the Baltimore Ravens released him at final cuts. The Niners looked to have a solid backup in Carr, but desperate at 1-6, Singletary has turned to Smith.

Alex Smith will be sidelined two or three weeks. It helps that San Francisco's bye week follows this Sunday's game.
