Singletary downplays possible interest in Merriman
If the San Francisco 49ers are indeed interested in Shawne Merriman, if and when the San Diego Chargers waive him, coach Mike Singletary is trying to low key his team’s approach.
That’s a smart idea right now because Merriman remains under contract to the Chargers and talking about him could constitute tampering. Merriman has some real baggage right now. He hasn’t been able to remain healthy and he’s simply not the same pass-rushing force he once was.
According to David White of the San Francisco Chronicle, Singletary said he is comfortable with the rotation he has right now among his outside linebackers.
“I think they're doing a good job," Singletary. “I think they're applying pressure, they're winning some of the one-on-one battles. I think they're doing a good job overall."
Parys Haralson isn’t a household NFL name, but he has three sacks and Manny Lawson has two interceptions. Of course, if Singletary wants a candid evaluation of Merriman, he could reach out to his former teammate Ron Rivera, who is the Chargers’ defensive coordinator.
“If there's someone out there that makes you better, you're always going to look at it," Singletary said, per the report. "But I like our guys right now."
