Skins hire Spanos to coach LBs
The Washington Redskins today officially announced the hiring of Lou Spanos as their linebackers coach. The team has also chosen to retain Kirk Olivadotti as a defensive assistant. Olivadotti was the team's linebackers coach under Jim Zorn and was heavily credited for the quick development of Brian Orakpo.
Spanos comes to the Redskins after 15 years as an assistant in Pittsburgh, where he spent time working under Washington's new defensive coordinator, Jim Haslett. It's a promotion of sorts for Spanos, who worked his way from a quality control coach in Pittsburgh and last season was the Steelers' assistant linebackers coach.
"Lou has been a vital part of a Steelers defense that has had an amazing run of success of the last 15 years, particularly from the linebacker position," Coach Mike Shanahan said in a statement released by the team. "He has familiarity working with Jim and he will be a tremendous asset to our staff."
