Snead tries to rationalize leaving Ole Miss early

Jevan Snead is left to rationalize a decision turned wrong. Very wrong.

The Ole Miss quarterback gave up his final year of eligibility in Oxford, Miss., to enter the NFL draft. Then he went undrafted. Oops. Snead, who some had projected to be a high pick a year ago, endured a tough season last fall and clearly didn’t make a prudent decision.

He’s signed as an undrafted free agent with the Buccaneers, and he was in Tampa this weekend trying to spin the situation to the Pewter Report.

"I had my degree. I graduated in December with a marketing degree," Snead said. "That was huge thing for me. Really I was just felt like it was my time to go. We had a bunch of people leaving the team. A bunch of people say it was because of competition, and I'll tell you right now that's ridiculous. I wouldn't have come out if I were afraid to compete. I know that the next level is all about competing. Anybody who said I was afraid to compete doesn't know what they're talking about."

Snead might be excited to be a member of the Bucs. They might offer a legitimate chance for a backup job behind Josh Freeman. But he still would have been better served returning to school and working on his game while taking a few grad school courses to remain eligible.

"None at all. No regrets, I'm happy to be here," said Snead. "If I had the chance to do it again I'd do the same thing. I'm trying to live my dream, and do it one day at a time."

The guess here is in no way did Snead’s dream include an adventure as an undrafted free agent. This is a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure gone wrong, and he’s a poster boy for players and agents making decisions that are not sound. Sure, Snead might rally and carve out a spot for himself with the Bucs. But as an undrafted free agent, he’s got a long road ahead of him.
