Sonny Jurgensen is a believer in RG III
Sonny Jurgensen remains one of the standards quarterbacks are judged against with the Washington Redskins.
So, a rookie like Robert Griffin III, as hyped as he has been, has plenty to live up to for a franchise that’s been seeking a quarterback without much success since Mark Rypien enjoyed one magical season in 1991.
But Jurgensen, a radio analyst for the club, likes what he sees in Griffin to this point.
“This is exactly what the Redskins need,” Jurgensen said, according to CSN Washington. “He’s very gifted. He’s such a tremendous athlete. I’ve never seen anyone so quick playing that position.
“I think he’s going to have a great year.”
Of course, we’ve heard Jurgensen gush about the long line of quarterbacks the team has trotted out in the last two decades and few have panned out for very long. But the Redskins, who paid a high price to trade up for the No. 2 pick to select Griffin, have a buzz about the Heisman Trophy winner from Baylor.
“He’s smart enough to understand – just ask anyone who knows him,” Jurgensen said of the hype being placed on Griffin. “He’s from a military family. He understands there’s a lot of work that goes into making everything happen.”
