Jeff Garcia has been working out, intent on getting a job as a 40-year-old quarterback, according to a league source.

But while Garcia’s name has been mentioned prominently with the UFL’s Omaha Nighthawks, he doesn’t intend on joining the young league in its second season, our source said.

Garcia was released by the Oakland Raiders in training camp last year when it was apparent that JaMarcus Russell, another quarterback whose named has been mentioned in connection with the Nighthawks, was going to be the starter. Boy, what a mistake that proved to be.

When the Philadelphia Eagles lost Donovan McNabb to broken ribs last September, they brought Garcia back for a second tour of duty. It lasted two weeks. If the Eagles do cut ties with Michael Vick – a rumored possibility at this point – they’ll be down to starter Kevin Kolb and Northwestern rookie Mike Kafka. That would make Garcia’s name one of the first mentioned because he has experience, knows the system and has worked well under Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg in the past.

Garcia doesn’t figure to be a savior for anyone, but he certainly could help a team in a jam and right now you could do much worse seeking an emergency alternative on the street.
