Source: Packers signing tight end Jared Cook

Veteran free agent tight end Jared Cook is signing with the Green Bay Packers, according to a league source. Cook was released last month by the St. Louis Rams along with defensive end Chris Long and linebacker James Laurinaitis. The former Tennessee Titans third-round draft pick from South Carolina could upgrade the Packers' offense significantly as a big, athletic downfield target who can run away from safeties and linebackers. Cook, 28, has caught 273 career passes for 3,503 yards and 16 touchdowns in seven NFL seasons. Over the past three seasons, all with the Rams, Cook has combined for 142 receptions for 1,786 yards and eight touchdowns. Cook has 2,309 receiving yards since 2012, an average of 577.3 yards per season during that span. At 6-5, 254 pounds, Cook has run the 40-yard dash in 4.50 seconds with a 41-inch vertical leap. Cook caught 39 passes for 481 yards with no scores on 75 targets last season. In 2014, Cook caught 52 passes for 634 yards and three touchdowns. He caught 51 passes for 671 yards and five touchdowns in 2013, his first season with the Rams. Follow me on Twitter: @AaronWilson_NFL Aaron Wilson covers the Texans for The Houston Chronicle.
