Southern Miss (Favre?) can be eliminated

The news must be doubly bad if you are Southern Miss baseball fan who happens to claim allegiance to the Minnesota Vikings.

The Golden Eagles have their backs against the wall to start the NCAA Baseball Tournament and, after all, Brett Favre told the team last month that if it made a return trip to the College World Series that he would return for a 20th season in the NFL with the Vikings.

Southern Miss didn’t get off to a good start, as Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, noted. Clemson pounded the Golden Eagles 10-1 in the opening round of the Auburn Regional. Southern Miss plays Jacksonville State today. A loss ends Southern Miss’ season. And Favre’s return?

Well, no. After undergoing ankle surgery for X to mark the spot, the belief is that Favre will make a return to the Vikings sometime in August. Favre obviously wants to see his college do well. It could be season over for the Golden Eagles before the weekend is over. Of course, if Southern Miss rallies in improbable fashion to make a Super Regional and then head to Nebraska, Favre could end the suspense once and for all.
