Spagnuolo on Atogwe departure: 'We move on'

Sure, the St. Louis Rams could remain in play for veteran safety O.J. Atogwe, but from the sounds of things they are prepared to move on.

The Rams couldn’t strike a deal with Atogwe before midnight on June 1 and that made him an unrestricted free agent. If St. Louis was not willing to pay Atogwe what he wanted then, how are they suddenly going to offer him what he wants now? It’s unlikely to happen and the Rams are reacting accordingly.

"He's a good football player, and you don't like to lose good football players. But we move on," coach Steve Spagnuolo said, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "It'd be no different if somebody got hurt. And it happened last year when O.J. had the shoulder injury."

Like any good coach, Spagnuolo didn’t close the door on a possible return. Of course, that would be at the team’s terms, and again, those didn’t sit well with Atogwe before June 1.

"The process took us to this point, but it's ongoing," Spagnuolo said. "We're still working at it and very hopeful. We'll just have to see what happens."

Spagnuolo knows the chances of something being worked out are remote. The Rams have Craig Dahl in place and he’s been working with the starters since Atogwe suffered a shoulder injury in December at Chicago. St. Louis will remain in contact with Ken Landphere, Atogwe’s agent, but look for him to head elsewhere. The trick will be finding a team with some money left to spend.
