Special teams coordinator Dave Toub leaving Bears

Dave Toub was not selected as one of the three finalists for the head coaching job of the Chicago Bears, so he is leaving the organization.

The Bears’ special teams coordinator for the last nine seasons is considered one of the best at his craft in the NFL, and all signs point to Toub joining the Kansas City Chiefs and reuniting with Andy Reid.

Toub, who has a contract through 2013 with the Bears, will not return to the franchise to work for the new head coach. Toub was one of 13 known candidates that interviewed with general manager Phil Emery for the head-coaching position. Emery granted Toub permission to interview with the Chiefs and Carolina Panthers knowing that it would be awkward for Toub to return and work for a head coach he competed against for the head job.

Toub was originally hired in the NFL by Reid in 2001 with the Philadelphia Eagles. The two worked together previously at Missouri and UTEP and now they are expected to join forces again. The Bears’ special teams has ranked in the top 10 in the NFL eight times in nine seasons under Toub.
