Steelers release Troy Smith

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced via Twitter that they have released quarterback Troy Smith.

Smith won the Heisman Trophy in 2006 playing for Ohio State, but was never able to carve out more than a backup role in the NFL. He appeared in 14 games over three seasons for the Baltimore Ravens from 2007-09, and was with the San Francisco 49ers in 2010.

In 2011, Smith was with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football Leauge, but signed with the Steelers in January.
