Steven Jackson can void contract after this season
Steven Jackson would like to complete his career with the St. Louis Rams but the organization doesn’t seem driven to make any commitment to the franchise’s all-time leading rusher at this point.
But the Rams and Jackson have come up with a system that will allow Jackson to enter free agency after this season – if he chooses – in an effort to secure a multi-year contract. Jackson is signed through 2013 but in a re-worked contract, according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Jackson can void the deal after this season and enter free agency.
Jackson has a base salary of $7 million this season and is scheduled to earn $7 million next season. He can stay and earn that money with the Rams or nix the deal and become a free agent. The Rams, of course, could also release Jackson.
A groin injury has slowed Jackson this season but he was running hard Thursday night in a 17-3 victory over the Arizona Cardinals at the Edward Jones Dome. Jackson rushed for 76 yards on 18 carries.
