Texans release Eric Winston
The Houston Texans continue to create cap space, and did so in a surprising manner on Monday.
The Texans released starting right tackle Eric Winston, according to the Houston Chronicle.
“I was surprised,” he said. “They told me they were up against it (salary cap), and they didn’t want to insult me by asking me to take a pay cut. They said they hated to do it, and maybe we could work something out, but, well, I’m just stunned. I didn’t want to leave. This just sucks.”
It will probably "suck" in a few days when Winston lands a deal on the free agent market, as starting tackles are usually paid handsomely.
There was some speculation that the Texans might be trying to clear cap space in order to make a last desperation run at keeping Mario Williams, who would probably become the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL if he gets to the open market tomorrow.
